Faculty have to publish in scholarly journals. Students do not. The type of non-fiction writing I am suggesting is for publishing in the trades. These online publications are subject-specific and created to help professionals keep up with innovative changes in their field. They are searched and read by leaders as well as bots to identify new products and trends. Editors are looking for original content to be put between the advertisements. Articles are short and easy to read.
How does this enhance your teaching and their learning? Student publishing can be a way to share their knowledge with a broader, public audience, reinforcing that what they are learning in the classroom matters outside of the academy. We have all seen the twinkle in someone’s eye when they get excited by a topic. Professors have to keep to the teaching schedule, but this is an opportunity to stoke the fires of learning. They can summarize a scholarly article in a modern-day context or write an informed opinion piece. If they cite you as an influencer, more the better. During this session, we will discuss ways to encourage writing outside the classroom. I will also share how to find outlets for these non-scholarly pieces.
